Integrative Nutrition and Weight Management

Eating well is about much more than just the food. Eating well is lifestyle choice. It is a conscious choice to buy foods that nourish the body as well as the spirit. It can be both comforting and healing; boosting your body’s natural healing potential. The goal is to prepare foods and eat in a way that will help our body move towards our goal of optimal health through optimal living.

Integrative Nutrition

The practice of integrative nutrition takes a holistic approach to wellness recognizing that the foundation for optimal health and healing begins with a health promoting diet.

Integrative Nutrition and Weight ManagementOur bodies are biochemical environments and everything we put into them in terms of the foods we choose to eat or not eat makes a difference. These choices also determine, to a great extent, if we are moving towards wellness or away from it. For many they will also determine whether we age well or poorly and what, if any, chronic diseases we will face.

An integrative nutrition consultation begins with an assessment of your current diet and how it may be impacting your health. We discuss all that has brought you to where you are now including your family and health histories and then discuss how to best minimize any current risks. Therapeutic nutrition Interventions can often prevent, reverse or delay the onset of disease.

Integrative nutrition consultations address the following issues:

Heart Disease
Cancer Treatment / Survival Support
Vegetarian Eating
Healthy Aging
Anti Inflammatory Diet
Food Sensitivities
Diabetes
High Blood Pressure
Metabolic Syndrome
Weight Management

Weight Management

The approach we take to weight management at Duke Integrative Medicine incorporates current nutrition and exercise information, behavioral and stress management skills, and the practice of both general mindfulness meditation and meditation skills specific to eating. We call this approach Mindful Eating.

We recognize that people gain weight for a variety of reasons and provide you with healthy information, as well as strategies for recognizing physical signs of when your body needs food and when you’ve had enough, as well as strategies for managing emotions in other ways than food. Mindful Eating is a means of helping you look at all aspects of your eating behaviors.

Mindful Eating skills teach you about the how and the why of eating, as well as the foods you choose to eat. The practice of Mindful Eating includes learning how to pay attention to physical sensations and use these to guide your eating in a way that will support reaching and maintaining a healthy weight. Mindful Eating has been shown to improve our relationships with our body and with the food we eat.

Duke Integrative Medicine offers opportunities to learn Mindful Eating skills in individual sessions and courses so you can learn to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
