Integrative Health Coach Professional Training
Certification Course
Mastery in the field of integrative health coaching comes with practice, skill development, and personal supervision. The Certification Course is open to those who have completed the Foundation Course. It is designed to deepen your understanding and application of the core skills and to offer you an excellent forum to achieve an expanded professional level of competence in the field. This course is delivered primarily via web and teleconferencing. Those who complete all requirements for the Certification Course are certified as integrative health coaches by Duke Integrative Medicine.
Course components include:
- An on-site orientation weekend to network with your peers, meet your coaches, and deepen your learning (July-December 2012 course only; beginning in January 2013 the Certification Course will be entirely distance learning with no on-site orientation weekend)
- Individual supervision and support for 9 sessions by our senior integrative health coaches
- Regular telephonic group learning sessions with coaching demonstrations and modeling of skills
- Full access and use of the Integrative Health Coaching website and class interface
Additional requirements for graduation from the Certification Course include:
- One-on-one personal coaching for 7 sessions with a certified integrative health coach* (an agreement with your personal coach must be in place prior to the start of the course)
- Completion of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course or approved equivalent**
- Documentation of 100 hours of coaching; 25 of these may be pro bono*** (agreements and signed consent forms for a minimum of 4 coaching clients must be obtained prior to the start of the course; contact the program coordinator for the appropriate forms)
- Successful completion of both an oral and a written examination
*The cost of the personal coaching sessions is not included in the cost of the Certification Course. The 7 personal coaching sessions may be completed with any integrative health coach who has received certification through Duke Integrative Medicine and may be started any time after completing the Foundation Course. A list of these providers is available here: http://www.dukeintegrativemedicine.org/professional-training/ihcpt-find-a-certified-integrative-health-coach.
**The cost of the MBSR course is not included in the cost of the Certification Course. Many participants may have already completed this requirement. The MBSR course may be completed at Duke Integrative Medicine or other approved providers. The purpose of the mindfulness training requirement for the IHCPT Certification Course is to enhance the ability of the coach to be deeply present during coaching with clients. Please be aware that completing an MBSR course does not qualify you to teach mindfulness skills to your clients individually or through classes. If you wish to teach mindfulness skills through a professional role, please consider taking a course such as Mindfulness Training for Professionals, which is offered at Duke Integrative Medicine. If you wish to teach MBSR courses, please refer to the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness website for information on available training: http://www.umassmed.edu/cfm/oasis/index.aspx.
***Some participants will require more time to complete their 100 coaching hours in order to qualify to take the examination. The examination may be taken up to a full year from the start of the course in order to meet the needs and schedules of those in the training.
Benefits of completing the Certification Course:
- Professional recognition as a certified integrative health coach
- The invitation to add your professional contact information to the Duke Integrative Medicine website - a resource for potential clients
- Belonging to an expanding professional network of peers in this field
